TCM presents 1937 Goldwyn classic, "The Hurricane," directed by John Ford - featuring Frank Loesser's first hit composition

At 12 Midnight on the evening of July 20, Turner Classic Movies will show the 1937 Goldwyn classic,
"The Hurricane," directed by John Ford and starring Jon Hall, Dorothy Lamour, Mary Astor, Thomas Mitchell, Raymond Massey and John Carradine.

Alfred Newman's Oscar-nominated score features the music of the song, "The Moon of Manakoora."

The song is not sung in the film, but was used widely for exploitation purposes. It was the first major hit for lyricist Frank Loesser, and was recorded successfully by the film's star, Dorothy Lamour. So much so that many mistakenly assume the song is sung in the film.

Dorothy Lamour's version is available on iTunes, as are recordings byThe Benny Carter Quartet, Henry Mancini, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Martin Denny, Sonny Rollins, Tony Martin and Vaughn Monroe.

The song can also be purchased in Karaoke form.

It was recorded more than once by its composer, Alfred Newman, though apparently his versions are not currently available through iTunes.

The film is available on DVD.  Preview clips may be seen at the TCM site here.
