LA Times says Guys and Dolls seemed right at home at the Hollywood Bowl

Guys and Dolls, a Broadway musical set in Times Square, filled with Hell’s Kitchen riff-raff and their would-be reformers and subtitled A Musical Fable of Broadway, seemed right at home at the Hollywood Bowl this weekend. But how could it not when it had Brian Stokes Mitchell, the American musical’s most charismatic leading man, assaying the role of gambling giant Sky Masterson, as well as the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by musical director Kevin Stites, bringing out every cheeky nuance of Loesser’s irreplaceable score?

Frank Loesser wrote the lyrics to over 700 songs, wrote and composed the Pulitzer Prize winning musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", and the ultimate piece of American musical theater "Guys and Dolls, a Musical Fable of Broadway". He won the Tony Award in 1951, as Best Composer and Lyricist. "Guys and Dolls" won for Best Musical. He was a tireless contributer to Broadway and Hollywood, and to the War effort in World War II. He was nominated for the Academy Award for "Thumbelina"(Hans Christian Andersen, 1952) and won the Academy Award for "Best Song" for "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (Neptune's Daughter, 1949).
